Your utility rate keeps rising. You have no control over it.

No contract, no negotiation, no vote. When the utility raises rates, it just happens to you. Solar doesn't make the bill disappear, but it swaps an open-ended one for a predictable payment, control you didn't have before.

The evidence, region by region

Rates keep rising because of aging infrastructure, growing data center demand, and natural gas price volatility. It's already showing up across New England and Long Island:

Connecticut

United Illuminating (2025): residential bills up roughly 7-8%. Source →

PSEG Long Island: LIPA approved a 3.9% base rate increase for 2025, about $7 more a month for the average household; on top of that, the pass-through Power Supply Charge (PSEG's own published monthly rate history) jumped 13.23% in February 2026 alone, then another 12.7% in March, on rates that already run well above the national average. It starts with a straightforward conversation, not a sales pitch. Here's exactly what happens along the way.

Discovery

A straightforward conversation about your property, usage, and goals. Ideally in person, so we can walk the property together, phone or video if distance or timing gets in the way. No pressure, no jargon, just enough to understand whether solar, battery backup, or heat pumps make sense for your situation.

Proposal

Using satellite mapping and your utility data, we build a system design before anyone sets foot on your roof. You receive a full proposal: system size, financing options, applicable incentives, and projected savings. The proposal is based on digital analysis, the site visit that confirms it comes next.

Site survey & engineering

A licensed technician visits to verify the digital design against real-world conditions: roof structure, electrical panel, shading, and HVAC layout. If anything needs to change, you see a revised design before the project moves forward. Your contract includes a feasibility contingency: if a required change makes the project unworkable for you, you can walk away.

Installation & turn-on

Your installation partner handles permits, utility interconnection, and the licensed crew. I stay your point of contact through commissioning, there when the system goes live, not gone the moment the contract was signed.

Financing

Four ways to afford your project

The right one depends on your goals, your roof, and your bill. This is the general shape of each, not a recommendation. That comes from an actual conversation.

Cash Purchase

You buy the system outright and own it from day one. No interest, no monthly payment: every dollar the system saves is yours, and it's the highest total return over the system's life if you have the capital available.

Loan

You finance the purchase through a bank or a specific solar or heat pump lender, often with little or nothing down. You still own the system, so once the loan's paid off, the savings are entirely yours too.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

Solar-specific: a third party owns, installs, and maintains the system on your property, and you simply buy the power it produces, usually at a lower rate than your utility. $0 upfront, and maintenance isn't your problem.

Lease

For solar, similar to a PPA, but you pay a flat monthly rate for the equipment instead of per kWh. A prepaid version also exists: a discounted lump sum upfront that eliminates the monthly payment entirely. Similar lease-style plans, sometimes called comfort solution plans, are also available for high-efficiency heat pump systems.

A note on the federal tax credit: as of 2026, the 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit for systems you buy with cash or a loan is no longer available under current law. Third-party-owned systems (lease or PPA) work differently: the financing company, not you, owns the equipment and claims the credit, then may pass along some of that savings through a lower rate. State-by-state incentives

Most states also offer their own incentive programs, on top of anything federal. A plain-language starting point for each below, always verify current terms with the linked source before relying on any figure.

Connecticut

The Renewable Energy Solutions program pays residential solar owners either a fixed buy-all rate or a netting credit at the retail rate, recently extended through 2035. The Energy Storage Solutions program offers upfront and performance-based incentives for home battery storage. For heat pumps, Energize CT offers rebates from $250 to $1,000 per ton depending on tier, plus 0.99% APR financing through the Smart-E Loan program.

Maine

Maine's Net Energy Billing program credits solar owners for excess generation, and a new Small Battery Program pays up to $200 per kW discharged annually during peak events, worth up to $9,000 over 10 years for a typical home battery. For heat pumps, Efficiency Maine offers $1,000 to $3,000 per outdoor unit depending on income (up to 3 units per home), among the more generous programs in the region for lower-income households.

Massachusetts

The SMART Program pays solar owners a per-kWh production incentive on top of any federal credit, and the state offers a 15% income tax credit (up to $1,000) for renewable energy systems on your primary residence. Mass Save also offers heat pump rebates up to $8,500 (up to $16,000 for income-qualified households), plus 0% financing up to $25,000 through the HEAT Loan program. Battery storage can qualify for utility demand-response incentives too, like Eversource's ConnectedSolutions.

Worth noting: these rebates tend to shrink, not grow. The standard whole-home heat pump rate dropped from $3,000 per ton (capped at $10,000) in 2025 to $2,650 per ton (capped at $8,500) for 2026, a real cut in one year. Waiting rarely pays off.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire's Residential Renewable Electrical Generation Rebate Program offers up to $0.20 per watt (capped at $1,000 or 30% of system cost) for qualifying solar installations, and state law mandates net metering for excess generation. For heat pumps, NHSaves offers $250 per ton (up to $1,250) for switching off oil, gas, or propane, or up to $1,250 per ton (up to $6,250) if you're replacing electric resistance heat.

New York (East End of Long Island)

PSEG Long Island's standard NY-Sun rebate has been fully allocated since 2016, so most homeowners here won't see an upfront per-watt check the way CT or NH residents might. What still applies: a 25% New York state tax credit on qualified solar equipment (up to $5,000), sales and property tax exemptions on the system, and full retail-rate net metering, which matters more here than almost anywhere in the region since PSEG Long Island's rates are among the highest in the country. Income-eligible households (80% of area median income or below) can still access a $0.40/watt rebate through the NY-Sun Affordable Solar program.

For heat pumps, PSEG Long Island administers the NYS Clean Heat program directly: $4,000 at market rate, $5,000 in a designated disadvantaged community or for moderate-income households, and $7,500 for low-income households, through participating contractors.

Worth noting: these figures are specific to PSEG Long Island's territory, not New York State generally. Incentives elsewhere in the state (Con Edison, National Grid, and other utility territories) run through different programs and numbers.
